SPORTS BUSINESS: CHINA

A NEW SPORTS BUSINESS EMPIRE IS EMERGING

The Chinese government is using sports to develop other sectors in the country and the national plan calls for heavy state promotion of sports. Over a third of Chinese citizens play sports and residents, already rooted in a culture that emphasizes physical fitness, are discovering sports trends, such as running and fitness. A newly- emerging middle class is spending on sporting goods, events and related services and, consequently, China’s economic boom has brought in an influx of capital and investment from Western brands.

THE SPORTS INDUSTRY LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE

Since the 2010's, China has invested heavily in domestic and international sports businesses, snapping up foreign teams, manufacturers and media outlets and providing a new audience for these brands.  Of late, the focus of the national sport policy has circled largely around soccer; President Xi's agenda largely invested in growing the sport and has proclaimed the ambitious goal of winning the 2050 World Cup.

Ping Pong and badminton are China's traditional sports and the Chinese dominate the professional and International levels. Basketball is also a national favorite, but with foreign roots, it took Mao's favor for the sport to survive the Cultural Revolution. Now, almost 20% of Chinese athletes play basketball and China is the single largest international market for the NBA. Table tennis is the biggest amateur recreational sport in China with an estimated 300 million players.

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games will be hosted in Beijing (also host to the 2008 Summer Olympics) and winter sports, like skiing, are also a focus of the new sport policy. Consequently, western sports, such as football and hockey have grown in popularity. China has hosted NBA and NHL games and the NFL is actively seeking a way to host a regular season game there as well.
